A new STEM room equipped with advanced technology is benefitting students at Broome Senior High School
The state-of-the-art STEM room is designed to immerse students in hands-on learning with the latest technology, such as a laser cutter, a computer numerical control (CNC) router, 3D printers and a vinyl cutter.
Students can use new laser cutters in their design and technology classes.
The new technology offers students unique opportunities to engage with real-world projects and will play an important role in preparing students who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Broome Senior High School students, Hudson Northey, Sophie Griffin and Scarlett Griffin said the new STEM workshop has allowed them and others to expand and elevate the complexity and scope of their projects.
“Whether it’s using the laser cutter to engrave highly detailed designs into my project, or the new CNC router to improve future projects, the STEM room is a big step forward,” Nathan said.
“I used the laser cutter recently to make the back plate of my clock project, a task that only took around five minutes for a perfect result, compared to hours of meticulously cutting out the same thing.
“These machines are efficient and allow students to spend more time focusing on improving our designs.”
Scarlett Griffin said her favourite new piece of technology is the laser cutter.
“I have used this to add extra details to my projects, and it opens up new possibilities for designing,” Sophie added.
“The technology behind the machines is interesting to learn about and helps me understand the process taken into designing and producing high quality pieces of work.
“I already notice the skills I am developing and how it could be a part of my future education and possible career.”
