Reward and recognition

An inspiring principal who is deeply respected for her compassion and innovative approaches has been named a finalist for the Department’s 2025 Women of Achievement Award.

Yanchep Rise Primary School principal, Helen Demiris, was one of five finalists celebrated as part of the award that recognises outstanding female employees who make a significant contribution to public education in WA.

Yanchep Rise Primary School principal Helen Demiris is one of five finalists for the 2025 Women of Achievement award.

Ms Demiris was nominated for her dedication to creating a supportive and connected school community.

She is deeply respected across the school community, leads with passion, and is committed to empowering staff through a collaborative environment.

Ms Demiris has campaigned for improved safety and community connection by establishing the Yanchep Hub, introducing the Berry Street Education Model to support the emotional wellbeing of students, and creating the Bush 2 Beach Network.

She said being a finalist in the Director General’s Women of Achievement Award was deeply meaningful.

“I truly believe this recognition reflects the collective efforts of my Riser family at Yanchep Rise Primary School,” she said.

“We work hard, every day, to create a space where our students are given every opportunity to succeed, and this recognition feels like a celebration of that shared commitment.

“It was a mix of excitement and gratitude because it just reinforces how much we’re capable of when we all pull together.

“Professionally, it represents the strong community we've built at Yanchep Rise Primary School since opening the doors in 2021.

“On a personal level, this award is especially meaningful. Growing up with Macedonian cultural values, leadership roles for women were not common. I was fortunate to have a powerful, independent role model in my mother, and as a mother myself, I’ve always wanted to be a strong role model for my daughter.”

Reflecting on the importance of education, Ms Demiris said it was significant for two main reasons.

“First, I see how our school is a safe space that truly supports both students and parents, creating a sense of community. It’s a privilege to help guide the next generation and support them in choosing a better path for their future,” she said.

“On a personal level, I know education opens doors you never thought possible. It’s allowed me to break through barriers and achieve things I never imagined. I’ve experienced firsthand how the right support and opportunities can change lives, and I’m passionate about passing that on.”

As the foundation principal of Yanchep Rise Primary School, Ms Demiris has been instrumental in creating a strong learning community with a positive and supportive culture.

“It has truly been an honour to open Yanchep Rise Primary School and be part of building something special from the ground up,” she said.

“I’ve had the privilege of leading the school and the Bush 2 Beach network, working alongside like-minded leaders who are equally dedicated to improving the lives of our students and community.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited about what’s next as we continue to build on this foundation and make an even greater impact.”

The Director General’s Women of Achievement Award winner will be announced at the International Women’s Day breakfast on Thursday 6 March, where inspirational special guest speaker Turia Pitt will share her ultimate story of triumph over adversity.
