As the final date for submitting applications for the Bob Hawke Aboriginal Teacher Scholarship nears, the most recent recipients have provided some insight into what is motivating their career paths.
The scholarship supports aspiring Aboriginal secondary teachers who are pursuing either undergraduate or postgraduate teaching qualifications.
Sarah Thomas and Simon Hayward were the recipients of the 2023 scholarships.
Mr Hayward was awarded the postgraduate scholarship. He is currently completing his Master of Secondary Teaching.
He said he was inspired to become a teacher after the impact that his own teachers had on him while growing up.
”I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment, as I know that this scholarship would benefit me by placing me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming an inspirational teacher,” he said.
“I want to give people what my school teachers gave to me. I want to work extremely hard to contribute to as many children and communities as I can.
“Teaching sport, as well as educating and promoting healthy lifestyle habits throughout Physical Education, are the things that I dream about. As all I want to do is help change people’s lives for the better.”
Ms Thomas, recipient of the undergraduate scholarship, is currently in her second year of studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education.
She is both excited and proud about her selection and is looking forward to making a positive impact on students.
“I’ve had a handful of amazing teachers that have made lifelong positive impacts on myself and taught me incredible lessons,” she said.
“I would like to be that person for other students.”
