A regional WA school has taken out a national award for the way it engages students in play-based learning.
Avonvale Primary School was awarded the inaugural Sydney Opera House Play Award which recognises schools that have a remarkable and ongoing contribution in this space.
The Northam school was celebrated for the way it provided students with effective high-quality play activities that lead to students developing greater skills in collaboration and creativity, while also supporting their social and emotional development.
A key initiative at Avonvale Primary School involved increasing the time students spend taking part in quality play. This included activities such as drawing, Lego, construction, painting, chalk drawing, golf, tennis, and four square.
Students also participated in one day of outdoor learning each week, with focuses including the arts, science, connecting to culture, and physical activity.
Avonvale Primary School principal Leah Vogler said the award was a game changer for students and the outdoor learning program.
“These funds will enable us to strengthen our outdoor learning program to set up permanent outdoor learning stations such as woodwork, developing our bush tucker garden, mud play areas and assorted equipment to increase student participation at different stations,” she said.
“More important though, is the validation of the importance of the role that quality play and outdoor learning has in educational settings.”
Sydney Opera House Play Award Panelist and Western Sydney University Professor Tonia Gray said the activities at Avonvale Primary School were providing positive benefits to students.
“This application shows how courageous leadership can introduce a play-based response to a challenging situation and clearly outlines the significant impact on student's engagement, academic performance and positive school community,” she said.
