A determined Perth swimmer is taking on an epic challenge to raise money for sick kids while inspiring her school community.
Janelle Ellement, Treeby Primary School manager corporate services, was selected as the solo swim ambassador for the Euroz Hartleys Port to Pub Swim with Hotel Rottnest.
Ms Ellement will complete a 19.7 km solo swim from Leighton Beach, in Fremantle, to Rottnest Island on March 15, raising money for Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Funds raised will go towards the Move to Improve initiative which embraces movement as medicine to help WA kids living with health conditions including type 1 diabetes, cancer, post-burn injuries, and cerebral palsy to regain their strength, confidence, and independence.
Ms Ellement said knowing that her efforts would directly support children will push her through the rigorous training commitment and marathon swim.
“Throughout my career with the Department of Education, I have seen firsthand the incredible impact that specialised care, equipment, and facilities can have on a child’s ability to regain their strength, confidence, and independence,” she said.
“I have worked in a range of education settings, and this has given me a comprehensive insight into the challenges many of our families face and the great work Perth Children’s Hospital does to support them.
“I truly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and through this fundraising effort, we can help make that happen for so many young lives.
“Supporting Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation means making a real difference in the lives of these children and their families, and it is a cause that resonates deeply with me on both a personal and emotional level.”
Ms Ellement hopes to inspire Treeby students and the school community by showing them the power of perseverance and determination.
“Completing this swim requires dedication, mental strength, and a willingness to push through challenges—qualities that are essential in both personal and academic life,” she said.
“Also, by demonstrating that anything is possible with hard work, I hope to encourage students to approach their own goals with the same mindset, whether they’re striving for academic success, sporting achievements, or personal growth.
“Taking on a marathon swim also highlights the importance of health, fitness, and resilience. It’s a powerful reminder that movement, exercise, and taking care of our bodies are essential components of overall well-being—lessons that are important for all students and our community, regardless of age or background.”
Ms Ellement said it’s also a chance to inspire others within the school community to make a difference where they can.
“For me, this swim is about raising awareness and support for a cause that affects so many children in our community,” she said.
“By sharing the story behind the event, I want to inspire others to engage in meaningful activities and consider how they, too, can make a difference. It’s a chance for students and the community to come together, united by the shared goal of helping kids.
“This swim is not just about me crossing the finish line; it’s about inspiring others to pursue their goals, support a worthy cause, and embrace the strength within themselves to face any challenges life throws their way. I absolutely cannot wait!”
