Diversity and inclusion

Diversity and inclusion

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, with different experiences. Our staff reflect the diversity of our student body, parents, communities, and stakeholders.

We commit to creating supportive work environments for our staff. We promote safe workplaces that are free of discrimination, harassment and bullying. Our staff bring diverse ideas, perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences – which are key to our success!

We take pride in being an equal employment opportunity provider.

We are dedicated to ensuring that our policymakers, leaders, line managers and staff make equity, diversity and inclusion part of every workday. Our commitment is outlined in our Equity Diversity and Inclusion Plan 2021–20251.

+Support for our staff

To maintain work-life balance, our staff have access to:

  • flexible work arrangements
  • workplace adjustments
  • leave.

We also provide support to staff facing challenging personal situations, such as family and domestic violence or grievances. You can refer to our Family and domestic violence leave guidelines2 or our Grievance Framework3.

Staff can join our Diversity Alliance Network. The network builds an inclusive workplace culture for staff with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Their allies are also welcome to join!

+Professional learning for our staff

We educate all our employees on preventing discrimination, harassment and workplace bullying. Our professional learning helps our workforce to respect diversity and model inclusive behaviour.

As a staff member, you can use our intranet to access:

  • online courses
  • training
  • resources.

All our employees complete an Aboriginal cultural awareness course. This helps staff to foster a culturally safe work environment.

We’ve recently launched disability awareness training for staff. The training promotes inclusivity for employees, job applicants and community members with disabilities.

We provide specialised training and practical support to principals and line managers. This builds skills to develop and maintain positive and inclusive workplaces.

+Diversity and inclusion in recruitment

Our recruitment practices reflect our Department’s commitment to providing career pathways for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • people with disabilities
  • people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • women
  • young people.
+Our equity and diversity team

Our specialised equity and diversity team works on equity, diversity, and inclusion matters. A part of their role is to create and review policies, procedures and guidelines. As one of our staff members, we’ll encourage you to share your diversity information with us so that we can develop:

  • professional learning
  • diversity initiatives
  • career pathways.
