WA Education Awards finalists: Excellence in Disability and Inclusion

Four schools have been recognised for creating an inclusive school environment.

Atwell College, Bob Hawke College, Beachlands Primary School, and Dowerin District High School have been named finalists in the Excellence in Disability and Inclusion category at the 2024 WA Education Awards.

This category recognises the outstanding work schools do in supporting the diverse needs of students, families, and communities.  

The winner will be announced at a presentation breakfast on Monday 11 November.   

Atwell College 

Atwell College has created an inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and focuses on students' strengths.  

The college has an Endorsed Education Support Program (EESP), which has been highly praised by parents and caregivers.  

There is also has purpose-built facility with a hydrotherapy pool, specialised sensory equipment, and life skills training rooms, designed to support students with disabilities. 

Bob Hawke College 

Bob Hawke College embraces an inclusive education model that doesn’t separate students with disabilities into "special" units. Instead, all students learn and grow together.  

One of the school’s initiatives Flexispace, offers sensory-friendly spaces to support self-regulation and boost student engagement. 

The college also has a peer circle program where students can build meaningful relationships.   

Beachlands Primary School 

Beachland Primary School uses proven strategies to create a learning environment where every student can do their best. The school also focuses on helping staff better understand and support the different needs of students.   

Speaking to The Geraldton Guardian Principal Helen Barnes was thrilled the school was recognised for its work. 

"It is wonderful recognition for the hard work and dedication of our team," she said. 

"Our current school business plan, Every Child, Every Chance, reflects our commitment to ensuring every student in our care is successful." 

Dowerin District High School 

All staff at Dowerin District High School are committed to supporting all students with diverse needs, through collaboration and innovative programs.   

One key initiative is their Kindy Readiness Program (KR) which helps students and parents build strong relationships from the start, ensuring a positive beginning to their school journey. 

The school is also committed to creating a safe learning environment for all students, which includes providing classrooms that cater to different learning styles. The students also get visited by Luna a therapy dog for extra support.
