Two teams of Marmion Primary School students claimed placings in a recent competition to design a sustainable city.

Run by the City of Stirling, the Sustainable Stirling Student Design Competition makes up part of Perth Design Week.

Marmion Primary School students took part in the Sustainable Stirling Student Design Competition.

Students are challenged to create eco-friendly urban infill designs for real suburban blocks, thinking creatively about sustainable development and urban change.

Several schools participated, and two of the three teams from Marmion Primary School took out second and third place in the Primary category. The school also claimed the Mayor’s Commendation Medal.

Teacher Rachel Hogarth selected 10 students for the Year 6 student enhancement group to participate in the competition.

Split into three teams, the students had four weeks to plan, design and develop their models.

“The students gained so much from participating in this project,” she said.

“(They) worked incredibly hard to complete their project, often giving up their recess and lunch times.

“I believe the students gained an understanding of how design, sustainability and community come together to make a beautiful space to live.”

Team Blue won the Mayor’s Commendation Award for their entry.

Mitchell, Axel and Ashton, from Team Blue, won the Mayor’s Commendation Award for their entry.

“It’s been a great experience, it has really changed the way we think about the environment as a whole,” they stated.

“This project has caused us to think about more than just having best home or plot of land.

“It’s about being eco-friendly and genuinely caring for our planet because climate change and global warming is a big problem, and this project has really opened our eyes to that.”

Each entry was showcased during Perth Design Week, with the winners announced at an awards event.

The competition is expected to run again in 2026. For more information, visit the City of Stirling website1.
