Alternative pathways into teaching

There is more than one way to become a teacher. Find your pathway into teaching.

Universities provide several entry points to encourage people to take the first step towards a future career in teaching. These include: 

  • using TAFE or other qualifications to meet entry requirements 
  • a bridging course or accelerated entry program 
  • studying a postgraduate qualification in addition to your undergraduate degree 
  • completing the Teach For Australia Leadership Development Program.

Explore the following options to help you discover your alternative pathway into teaching.

+Curtin University 

Curtin University has a range of courses and alternative entry pathways that can help you qualify for entry into different teaching courses. They provide pathways for high school graduates, TAFE graduates, and career changers. Find your entry pathway to Curtin2.  

+Murdoch University 

Murdoch University has several pathway courses with teaching as a study area including OnTrack Flex, FlexiTrack and OnTrack. Students also have the option to complete a support unit to transition into a Bachelor of Education. Find out more about Murdoch University's enabling programs3

+Notre Dame University 

Notre Dame University's Tertiary Pathways Program (TPP) is an alternate pathway for students who have not met the requirements for entry into an undergraduate course. The program is offered in person or in a virtual classroom setting. Successful completion may allow students direct entry into undergraduate Education courses. +University of Western Australia 

UWA offers a range of alternative pathways for applicants, including a Special Tertiary Admissions Test pathway, diploma entry pathway and experienced-based entry pathway. Head to their website for more information about UWA's admission entry pathways5.  

+Edith Cowan University 

ECU's UniPrep pathway provides bridging courses that allow students to apply for entry to a range of courses. ECU’s preparation courses are open to anyone who hasn’t been at school for a while, doesn’t have formal qualifications or didn’t get the required ATAR for a course.  Visit their website to find out more about ECU’s UniPrep courses6

+Teach For Australia’s Leadership Development Program 

Teach For Australia’s Leadership Development Program is an employment-based pathway into secondary teaching. If you completed a Bachelor's degree in an area other than education or teaching, this pathway might be for you!

As part of the 2-year program, participants achieve their Master of Teaching while working as classroom teachers, in schools where they are most needed. Program participants have a reduced teaching load and time for study and professional development. Additional support is provided through a school mentor, academic advisor and a teaching and leadership coach. To apply, head to the Teach for Australia website7.
