More than 130 schools will participate in Scitech’s first virtual excursions during this year’s National Science Week to celebrate and learn about this year’s theme: Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability.
From Tuesday 13 August to Friday 16 August, Year 3-6 students can become ‘Sustainability Explorers’ from the comfort of their classroom, with four, 45-minute interactive sessions.
Students can take part in Scitech’s virtual excursions for National Science Week.
“It was important for Scitech to ensure the excursions are accessible to all students,” Scitech Primary STEM Coordinator Ryan Forsyth said.
“Making them digital and free of charge means schools from regional and remote areas and those with financial or transport barriers to attending an in-person excursion are able to participate in a fun and unique science learning experience.”
Students can participate in four sessions:
- Oceans
- Wetlands
- Insects
- Deserts.
They will be joined by a Scitech science coordinator and experts within the field.
The sessions also allow students to learn more about the impact science has on sustainability and conservation.
It’s not too late to take part. Teachers who register will receive information and activity packs to continue exploring the topics past the excursions.
"The excursions have been designed to be an engaging and playful experience for students,” Ryan said.
“We're really excited to give students direct access to hear from a range of experts talking around this year's National Science Week theme of Species Survival.
“Engaging with experts doing science in Western Australian shows students the real-world application of the science they learn in the classroom.
“And (it) inspires them to see themselves doing similar roles in the future."
