In the midst of the digital age, one library officer believes ‘libraries are smack bang in front.’
Library Officer, Southern River College.
Shannon Warwick, the well-known library officer at Southern River College, was named West Australian School Library Association’s Library Officer of the Year earlier this month.
“People need to stop thinking about libraries as the ‘place where the books are kept’,” she said.
“Yes we do keep the books, and we still love books, but we have so many other things on offer in libraries now that people don’t even realise – services like 3D printers, creative technology hubs, apps, tech clubs and more.
“Libraries are also about community connection and reaching a wider audience, providing things to people they didn’t even know they needed.”

Her home is her own personal library with wall to wall bookshelves – housing an impressive collection that is ever growing.
“I really love it when I find passionate readers, or can foster a love of reading in people and bring out their personalities,” Ms Warwick said.
“School libraries are extremely important places for young people. They should be the hub of life within a school, where students can make a positive contribution, belong and take ownership.
“We recently held a tournament for our many students who love to play chess. It really brought the library to life.”
When asked how the award might benefit students, Ms Warwick’s passion shines through.
“The award recognition has given me more gusto to go even further with my work and do more great things in libraries,” she said.
“It has inspired me to do more, so hopefully my students will benefit from that.”
