Girrawheen Senior High School students recently swapped pens and pencils for pirouettes and sautés.

They had an amazing opportunity to learn from dancers from the notable Australian Ballet company.

Girrawheen Senior High School students Cadence Gordon and Maureen Jaliebah centre, with the Australian Ballet dance educators Sophie Wormald and Alexander Mitchell.

Senior and junior students attended a workshop that included warm-up activities, choreographic strategies, and the creation of a short contemporary routine.

The session ended with a beautiful performance by two dancers from Australian Ballet.

Speaking to PerthNow, Head of the Arts Department, Jenny Drpich, said that most students do not have the opportunity to participate in out-of-school training.

She said that the students were in awe of the dancers’ skills and technical ability.

“The opportunity to work with the Australian Ballet provided them with invaluable experience, expanding their knowledge of the possibilities available to pursue and giving them an understanding of what is required to perform at such an elite level,” she said.

“But above all, they were astounded to realise that the dancers were also real people—humble, down-to-earth, and ever so willing to share their expertise and knowledge.”

Girrawheen Senior High School is known for its outstanding performing arts academy, which frequently receives invitations to perform at community events.
