Community spirit was high this month when a group of young Perth humanitarians came together to raise money for the people of Syria who were devastated by the recent earthquake.

After watching a report on the earthquake on Behind The News, a news program aimed at school-aged children, a group of Year 5 Scarborough Primary School students set up a fundraiser stand selling baked goods and lemonade.

Following its success, the students then set up a stall at the Scarborough Sunset Markets where they sold baked goods, lemonade, succulents, books and toys donated by families and the school community.

Scarborough Primary School students held a fundraiser.

The students raised more than $1000 which was donated to UNICEF to assists those in need.

Speaking to ABC Perth, Scarborough Primary School student Mia, 9, said she sold croissants, banana bread, cake, grapes and flowers.

“I am raising money for Syria because of the earthquake there,” she said.

“I was lying in bed, and I thought it is not fair that I can lay in a bed and people in Syria don’t have a bed to sleep in and they have to sleep somehow, somewhere.”

Scarborough Primary School principal Sarah Dawson said it was wonderful to see the students supporting those in need.

“We are very proud of the humanitarianism and civic responsibility shown by this group of students,” she said.
