Each fortnight we take a look at the news and compile a summary of some of the exciting stories about our schools, staff and students.
The stories featured in these issues were published either in newspapers or online sources that are behind a paywall.
This fortnight (23/10/2021 – 5/11/2021) we saw inspiring stories covering topics such as World Teachers’ Day, fundraising and student artists.
Identical twin teachers make a natural difference – Subiaco Post – 23 Oct 2021
Summary
For 2021 World Teachers’ Day, identical twin sisters Mari Dart and Marisa Phoebe, reflect on their shared passion for teaching and how it may have been influenced by their childhood. Inspired by their mother who had wanted to be a teacher but wasn’t able to because of finances, Ms Dart is now principal at City Beach Primary School while Ms Phoebe is deputy principal at Woodlands Primary School. Following work experience at their brother’s school when they were in Year 10, they both realised they wanted to become teachers. Reflecting on what they love about teaching, Ms Phoebe said it was all about relationships and for Ms Dart it is the wonderful feeling of belonging to a school community.
Award-winning Stan finds clarity in writing – Subiaco Post – 23 Oct 2021
Summary
Young 17-year-old author Stan Jolly, from Perth Modern School has been chosen as the winner of the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers in the upper secondary category. Stan’s story ‘Ecdysis’ follows a young boy who moves to regional Australia hoping for a fresh start. He explores his identify after dealing with bullying and homophobia in the past. The entry was originally an assessment but Stan decided to enter it as he was passionate about the topic.
Art is in the heart for local students – Canning Examiner – 27 Oct 2021
Summary
Thornlie Senior High School showcases its talented students in its annual Arts and Technologies Exhibition which coincides with the school's 50th Anniversary celebrations. Now in its seventh year, the exhibition has been expanded to include the wider community to unveil the talents and outstanding outcomes of students to a larger audience. Exhibition manager and visual arts teacher, Dr Kim Le, said students from Years 7 to year 12 were looking forward to the exhibition after working hard to express themselves through their art.
College’s overflowing river of talent – Armadale Examiner – 28 Oct 2021
Summary
Student artists from Southern River College have been recognised internationally, with their work featuring on the US-based EarthxArt site as part of the Eco-Art competition. The theme is 'Plant the Seed' and 11 students have had their work feature on the site, which promotes environmental protection. The competition aims to give youth a voice on environmental issues.
Yakamia kids raise plenty – The Great Southern Weekender – 28 Oct 2021
Summary
Four Year 6 students from Yakamia Primary School have spent the past year running fundraisers to raise money for Telethon. The students held events including sausage sizzles, movie nights, pyjama days and Easter raffles to raise $6,745. Luella Edwards, Cody Colmer, Zachary Carder and Samuel Lilleyman wanted to give back to the community and help other kids. Yakamia Primary School teacher, Raelene Scott, said the top fundraising schools were selected to do on-air interviews, and the four students were selected by Telethon to travel to Perth, be part of the broadcasted show and interview celebrities. Ms Scott said she hoped the school’s participation in Telethon would encourage other schools to get involved.
A positive addition – Coastal Times – 3 Nov 2021
Summary
John Tokin College welcomes a new mural funded by the P&C, to inspire student positivity. The mural took two days to paint by artist, Sioux Tempestt, in collaboration with the students at John Tonkin College. The design was based on a positive word that could inspire the school and is a positive affirmation for students. Students also learnt important art tips and techniques.
Students’ world through art – Narrogin Observer – 4 Nov 2021
Summary
Narrogin Senior High School students displayed their artistic talent at their annual showcase held at the Nexis Exhibition Space. Through photography, graphic design, animation, visual art and sculpture, the students explored the theme of 'Collateral' through their own experiences. Narrogin SHS photography and design teacher Zoe Quartermaine said the public exhibition provided a platform for the students to showcase their best work to the community.
Falcon goes pink for cause – Mandurah Mail – 4 Nov 2021
Summary
On 29 October Falcon Primary School hosted a Pink Sports Day to raise money for breast cancer research. Student, Noah Parker, sparked the idea of getting involved after researching that 20,000 Australians are affected by breast cancer each year. The entire school wore pink and brought a gold coin donation, and a sausage sizzle and games were held. Two Year 6 classes faced-off for a game of netball and then played against the teachers. The efforts of students and staff raised a total of $1,517.
