It’s been a huge year for women’s soccer in Australia, but for Ruby Cuthbert, it shapes as the start of something even bigger.
The John Curtin College of the Arts Year 11 student recently signed on with Brisbane Roar ahead of the 2023/24 A-League Women’s season.

The Matildas are currently riding a wave of popularity across the nation after the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. Ruby is among the nation's next wave of stars.
“In Perth, it’s a really small community and I want to explore my ability and know my limits and push myself to be the best version of myself,” Ruby said ahead of her big move across the country.
“I’m really excited to see what the future holds.”
A talented defender, Ruby is the current captain of the Junior Matildas, the national women’s under-17 team.
The Junior Matildas are currently chasing qualification for the 2024 Asian Cup and are set to play 3 games in Vietnam, starting this week.
Ruby joined the John Curtin specialist football program in Year 7, where she had the opportunity to train alongside the boys, as well as build up knowledge on topics such as team tactics, and sports nutrition.
The 16-year-old said the program had set up her up well for the journey ahead.
The Women’s A-League season is set to kick-off next month.
