Top titration technique

A Perth chemistry teacher’s precision and accuracy in the science lab has led him to take out a national competition.

Governor Stirling Senior High School science teacher Amit Hosany won the Royal Australian Chemical Institute’s Titration Teacher Challenge.

A titration is a technique where a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution.

Mr Hosany said he was thrilled to win the challenge which was open to teachers across Australia, and thanked lab technicians Heather Bainbridge, Lachlan McBeath, and Natasha Daruwala for their support. 

“This competition is a game-changer for my school. It not only boosts our reputation but also invigorates our chemistry program,” he said.

“The recognition we are garnering highlights our commitment to academic excellence, teamwork, and the values of Governor Stirling Senior High School.

“This competition is not only enriching my own professional journey, but it’s also igniting a newfound enthusiasm for chemistry within my school, setting the stage for future scientific achievements."

Mr Hosany said it was important to have meticulous attention to detail when doing a titration.

“I emphasise the significance of reading the burette by minimizing parallax error and maintaining a controlled environment to ensure the utmost accuracy in the titration process,” he said.

“For those considering entering the competition or training students, my foremost tip is to instil a genuine passion for chemistry. Encourage students and graduate teachers to explore beyond the confines of textbooks, conduct experiments, and embrace the scientific method.”
