School psychology services
More than 650 school psychologists work in public schools and other settings across Western Australia. They help students by supporting their wellbeing, learning, and school experience.
The School Psychology Service works with students, teachers, and families to create safe and supportive schools.
School psychologists help by:
- supporting student wellbeing
- keeping students engaged in learning
- creating a positive school environment
- planning support for students.
School psychologists are not the primary providers of clinical mental health services for students.

School psychologists are trained professionals. They understand:
- mental health
- how students learn
- child development
- how schools work.
Their job includes:
- helping students feel safe and supported
- supporting students to learn and stay engaged
- working with staff to make schools safe and welcoming
- helping with school wellbeing programs
- giving advice on mental health and child safety
- working with parents, caregivers, and other professionals to support students.
School psychologists use effective strategies to help students. Whether they are working with students, those supporting students or schools, their work is:
- preventative – they help stop problems before they start
- proactive – they take early action to help students succeed
- inclusive – they support students from all backgrounds
- collaborative – they work with teachers and families
- respectful – they consider students' unique experiences.
School psychologists work with teachers, parents, and other professionals to give students the support they need. Talk to school staff or the principal to involve the school psychologist.
If you are worried about your child’s wellbeing or learning, talk to their teacher or the school principal. They can help provide the right support, including working with a school psychologist.
School staff manage requests for psychology services based on student needs and available resources.
If an outside professional (like a therapist) is already helping your child, they can contact the school to discuss working together.
Before a school psychologist works with your child, they need your consent. This means you:
- will get clear information about the service
- can ask questions before agreeing
- can change your mind anytime by telling the school psychologist.
School psychologists respect privacy. They only share information when needed to support your child. They will explain when and why information might be shared before they start working with your child.
If you have questions, talk to your child’s teacher or school principal. They can help find the best way to support your child’s learning and wellbeing.
