The AFL footy finals start this Thursday night, but a Pinjarra high school teacher is already celebrating victory, with a chance for more to come.
Pinjarra Senior High School’s Health and Physical Education teacher, Robert Beswick, is the 2024 AFL School Teacher of the Year, which is a part of the WA Football Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Pinjarra Senior High School’s Health and Physical Education teacher, Robert Beswick was named the 2024 AFL School Teacher of the Year.
Mr Beswick, is also a coordinator of the Pinjarra Football and Netball Academy (PFNA) and has been a key figure in the school’s sports programs for 14 years. He was also a handy footballer, having played 65 league games for Peel Thunder in the WAFL between 2007 and 2012.
His dedication to engaging students through football and netball has been vital in promoting growth both on and off the field. One of his standout achievements is the successful establishment of three female-only classes in the PFNA, marking a significant step forward for girls’ participation in sports at the school.
Beyond his teaching duties, Mr Beswick has coached various school football teams, organised major events, such as the PFNA Draft Day, and led exciting excursions, such as the PFNA South West Tour and PFNA Melbourne Tour. He also runs primary school coaching clinics, helping younger students develop a love for sport early.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have such an incredible teacher and person with such dedication as a part of our school,” said Pinjarra SHS principal Jan Stone.
“We look forward to seeing the continued positive impact Rob will have in the years to come on our students and our community.”
Mr Beswick’s impact extends beyond the classroom, as he has mentored many graduate teachers and built strong relationships with students, offering guidance and support.
His commitment to the town’s football and netball club, where he played and has volunteered for more than 14 years and currently serves as football manager, highlights his dedication to the community. His involvement has helped the club secure five premierships, with the latest win featuring 14 of his former students.
Mr Beswick is invited to attend the WA Football Volunteer of the Year Awards function at the WAFL Grand Final and is also in the running for the National Toyota AFL Volunteer of the Year award.
