It’s cool to be kind

Small acts of kindness have taken Goomalling Primary School student Tyrel Glatz all the way to Sydney, where he was named the West Australian Junior Ambassador to the Fred Hollows Foundation.

In memory of Professor Fred Hollows, the Fred and Humanity Awards recognise the humanitarian nature of everyday Australians. Year 6 student Tyrel was one of eight students recognised nationally for following in Professor Hollows’ footsteps by demonstrating kindness, compassion and integrity in daily life.

The win came as a surprise to Tyrel, who was aware he was nominated for the award but didn’t think he would win. He flew out to Sydney in November to accept his award. 

“I felt honoured to represent my school and very humbled to meet the other nominees. Listening to their stories and the amazing work they are doing is very inspiring. I hope to do more and be a part of real change,” he said. 

Goomalling Primary School Principal, Paige Ludwig, said Tyrel had demonstrated exemplary leadership and compassion, particularly in the face of his own personal challenges. 

 “Tyrel should be recognised for his selfless efforts in combating bullying in our community,” Paige said.   

“Tyrel is a fearless advocate for the marginalised, particularly those who are bullied, using his innate skills and dedication to foster respect, empathy, inclusion and understanding across our school, and the wider community.”   

Despite his young age, Tyrel is taking his new role model status in his stride.  

“I try to be a good leader that others can look up to and seek out for support,” he said  

“I lead through my actions and making sure I involve everyone and do things fairly. Everyone has the right to feel wanted, happy and accepted at school. School should be a fun, safe space for every child.” 

When asked about who he looks up to as his role model for kindness and compassion, Tyrel found his answer close to home.  

“My role model is my mum,” he said.  

“She is the very best in every way. My cousins Kale and Mitch who are just the nicest. I look to them for advice, or think 'what would they do’.”
