A north metropolitan school has come out on top at the 2023 WA Mental Health Awards for its exceptional mental health support for staff and students.
Kinross Primary School staff walked away with the top prize in the Mentally Healthy Education Award category for their dedication to providing positive mental health care and innovative initiatives.
Principal of Kinross Primary School, Therese Gorton said she was proud to receive the award.
Principal Therese Gorton said it was fantastic for the school to win and it takes a united and passionate team to achieve the results they have.
“It was a thrill and honour to win the Mentally Healthy Education Award,” she said.
“It is a true testament to the hard work and focus the whole school community has put into mental health at Kinross Primary School.”
Staff foster a positive and safe culture at the school with the various initiatives they have established.
Students have access to buddy and peer mediation programs, quiet zones in classrooms and emotional learning programs. Staff also promote mindfulness and meditation.
Parent and staff also receive support, with the school running parent workshops and staff professional learning focussing on mental health and creating a positive school culture.
These programs and opportunities, along with collaborations with organisations such as Youth Care, led to the school’s win at the awards.
Ms Gorton said being proactive is key when it comes to mental health.
“It is vital we promote exceptional mental health for staff and students, so they are happier, healthier, and more engaged and productive in the life of the school,” she said
“Early intervention and preventative measures are crucial to addressing the increase in mental health issues in our community.”
Halls Head College Education Support Centre and Maryteresa Higgins from Westfield Park Primary School were finalists in the education category.
