The second round of the WA Student Assistance Payment will soon be available for every eligible student in Western Australia.

It will provide cost-of-living relief for families to help with children's schooling.

All WA school students from Kindergarten to Year 12 are eligible if they have an active enrolment at a public school, non-government school or are registered for home education in Pre-primary to Year 12.

Parents and carers can claim $250 for each secondary student and $150 for primary and kindergarten students.

Claims open on 28 April 2025.

Who is eligible
  • All WA school students (Kindergarten to Year 12) with an active enrolment at a public school, non-government school or are registered for home education in Pre-primary to Year 12.
  • International full fee-paying students if they are enrolled in a WA registered school.
  • Mature age students studying to achieve a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
  • Students in Pre-primary to Year 12 educated by a registered home educator
  • Students enrolled in School of Isolated and Distance Education, Christmas Island District High School and Cocos Island District High School.
  • Students in the care of people assessed and approved as family carers, significant other carers and community foster carers by the Department of Communities.

The following students are not eligible:

  • Students who do not have an active enrolment at a public school, non-government school or are not registered for home education.
  • Children enrolled in a kindergarten program which is not provided by a registered Western Australian school.
  • Children living in residential care, group foster care, individualised care arrangements, complex care arrangements as defined by the Department of Communities.
  • Students registered in pre-kindergarten programs in school and non-school settings.
  • Students with a notice of arrangement (NOA) or an exemption from full-time schooling.
  • Students studying the WA curriculum at an international school.
Who can claim

The WA Student Assistance Payment can be claimed by:

  • a primary care giver (parent, guardian, or carer) responsible for the eligible student
  • a student aged 18 or over
  • an independent minor:
    • under regulation 147(1) of the Western Australian School Education Regulations (2000), as deemed by the principal
    • with a current letter of confirmation or statement from Centrelink that confirms independent status
  • a young carer under the Carers Recognition Act (2004) (WA).

Note:

  • A primary care giver can apply for a student aged 18 or over.
  • An adult cannot claim on behalf of an independent minor.
  • Independent minors and Young Carers need to claim using the paper claim form and make an appointment with their school for support to submit a claim.

In exceptional circumstances your school can assist with your claim if you:

  • are from a remote or small school
  • unable to complete the claim form
  • unable to provide 100-points of identification
  • unable to find a student's WA student number (WASN).
