Become a challenge captain
Register or nominate a challenge captain now!
A challenge captain is a school staff member from a WA public, Catholic, or independent school.
Challenge captains can register, monitor and most importantly, encourage student and staff participation and drive the challenge within your school community.
A challenge captain account allows you to:
- add runners who can't participate online
- view all runners registered at your school
- add walks, runs or wheels
- edit runner details at your school.
If you would like to become a challenge captain, email websitesupport@ministersrunningchallenge.wa.gov.au. Once your request has been received, we will email you the unique URL to sign up as a challenge captain. It may take 2 to 3 business days before you receive the email with the unique URL.
Prizes for participation
Your student runners can win amazing weekly prizes. Each week, students who log their runs, walks or wheels go in the draw to win a prize.
Some of the weekly prizes include:
- Apple Airtags
- Bluetooth speakers
- Fitbits
- mini golf vouchers.
Students who log the most activity and schools with the highest engagement will receive special awards at the end of the challenge.
One primary and one secondary student, as well as one primary and one secondary school, will be recognised.
Encourage students to run in the challenge
Parents and carers, school staff, siblings, and classmates all play an important role in encouraging students to develop a love of exercising.
Not all students are enthusiastic runners. This can be for any number of reasons and may include children:
- with a low level of athletic ability
- with processing or sensory issues
- with a disability.
We want to remove as many barriers to students engaging in physical activity as possible. You do a wonderful job of understanding your school community and we want to open access and inclusion to your students.
Here are some tips that can help with this:
- Make time to run each day and ensure this time is enjoyable.
- Suggest different running routes, challenges, locations, or themes that may interest students.
- Send a letter to parents and carers about the challenge and encourage them to register their child.
- Share students’ running achievements on a special board.
- Celebrate your school’s progress in the challenge via your newsletter or social media.
- Build a ‘community of runners’ and promote this as a run club for the school.
- Organise a dress-up day where students can dress as their favourite athlete.
- Promote significant events, such as the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, to motivate students.
Recognise students or classes for their effort
We encourage you to recognise students or classes for their efforts. You might like to celebrate:
- the first student, class, or year level to log a certain number of activities
- the student, class, or year level with the most minutes logged each week.
Students who participate in the challenge will receive a certificate of achievement. These will be downloadable, and you may like to celebrate this during your school assembly.
