A Perth secondary school is training the next generation of vital healthcare workers.
Leeming Senior High School students are studying a Certificate II in Community Health and Wellbeing where they gain the necessary entry-level skills and knowledge to work towards a career in community services and health.
The course, run by the Australian Medical Association Training Services, also provides information and guidance on the range of career opportunities in the sector.
Leeming Senior High School students are building their health and wellbeing skills.
After completing the course in Year 11, students can then go on to study a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance or a Certificate IV in Preparation for Health and Nursing Studies in Year 12, or a Diploma of Enrolled Nursing with the AMA.
Leeming Senior High School pathways and transition manager Vance Bryan said the course, new to the school this year, provided students with a pathway to pursue a career in the healthcare industry.
“This qualification is an opportunity for our students to start their career in the health and community services sectors whilst studying and remaining at school,” he said.
“Meaningful work experience with local organisations will form an essential part of the pre-traineeship, ensuring our students can make an informed decision about their career pathway while gaining valuable hands-on experience in real healthcare workplaces.
“Upon successful completion, students are able to progress on to further studies with either the AMA or in the many ever evolving and exciting areas of the health and community services sector or look to gain sustained employment in this industry.
“Building working relationships in 2024 with industry groups such as the AMA is the commencement of a larger curriculum improvement plan which will further embed on-site vocational training opportunities for our students in 2025.”
