Newly appointed Director General of the Department of Education, Lisa Rodgers, is looking forward to building on a successful public school system in Western Australia.
Announced by the Public Sector Commissioner as the head of public education today, Ms Rodgers, who has been chief executive of the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) since 2016, will start in the role on January 28.
“I’m really pleased and honoured to have the opportunity to lead public schooling in Western Australia,” Ms Rodgers said.
“I have a 20-year history in education and the reason I applied for the position was to make a more direct contribution to the education of students – education being so critical to their future success.
“WA has a public school system in good shape. There is so much to be proud of and I hope to be able to build on that.”
Ms Rodgers has held numerous roles in the education sector in Australia and New Zealand, including Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Education in New Zealand responsible for the New Zealand Curriculum, assessment and workforce policy, and the Deputy Secretary for the Data and Research Group.
Ms Rodgers has also held several other posts in Justice and Health, and served in the British Army.
She says she aims to visit schools and meet staff and stakeholders as soon as possible.
“I am a firm believer that building close working relationships with all public school stakeholders is important. I look forward to doing that soon,” she said.
