Pedalling to success

Students from a remote community school have undertaken a spectacular bike journey to one of the Kimberley’s most iconic attractions.

Kalumburu Remote Community School students completed the 180 km ride to Mitchell Falls last month. The ride is an annual tradition that started in 2015.  

Eight students and six staff completed the week-long journey by riding in tag teams for around five kilometres before switching with their peers.   

The ride involved students pedalling along challenging terrain to Theda Station, Munurru, and Mitchell River National Park, where they set up camp among the stunning landscape and natural surrounds. 

The region is known for its incredible gorges and waterfalls that are etched into the blocky, layered sandstone. 

Students spent the fourth day of the camp exploring the national park and visiting Mitchell Falls before taking a breathtaking helicopter flight over the falls. 

To prepare for the camp, students completed specialist bike training after school. While on the camp, students learnt about resilience and teamwork and had the chance to develop a range of skills outside the classroom.  

Kalumburu Remote Community School principal Simon Duncan said the camp was also the perfect opportunity for students to further develop their positive relationships with staff.  

“Students are selected based on training, ability, and the perceived benefit they will get out of attending,” Mr Duncan said.  

The ride was supported by not-for-profit organisation Garnduwa.
