WA Education Awards finalists: Excellence in wellbeing and learning

Four schools have been recognised for their incredible work and achievements in supporting the wellbeing of students.

Bob Hawke College, Kingston Primary School, Lockridge Primary School and Makybe Rise Primary School have been named finalists in the Wellbeing and Learning category at the 2024 WA Education Awards. 

The high standard of nominations highlights the great work being done in schools to meet the wellbeing needs of students, while creating environments where every person feels valued and welcome.   

The winner will be announced at a presentation breakfast on Monday 11 November.    

Bob Hawke College 

Bob Hawke College is dedicated to promoting student wellbeing through a comprehensive, multi-tiered support system that caters to its diverse students. 

Key initiatives include a special program that enhances social-emotional learning and fosters supportive peer relationships, and the Peer Circles initiative, aimed at preventing social isolation. 

The college also collaborates closely with families and community partners to ensure that all students, especially those with complex needs, receive personalised support. 

Kingston Primary School 

At Kingston Primary School, the wellbeing of students is a top priority, driven by the establishment of the Student Support Services Team. 

By integrating trauma-informed practices and collaborating with external services, Kingston Primary delivers a holistic approach to wellbeing, addressing the complex social and emotional needs of students. 

The proactive approach to wellbeing has led to improved student engagement, reduced negative behaviours, and a noticeable rise in academic performance. 

Lockridge Primary School 

By prioritising strong relationships with families and local organisations, Lockridge Primary School creates a supportive network that enhances both educational outcomes and personal growth. 

Initiatives, such as breakfast clubs and tailored mentoring programs, ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed. 

The school partners with various services, such as the Lockridge Medical Centre and Koya Aboriginal Corporation, to provide accessible support for health and cultural identity. 

Trauma-informed practices and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies have also been implemented, creating a safe and structured learning environment where students can thrive. 

Makybe Rise Primary School 

Makybe Rise Primary School is committed to fostering student wellbeing through an approach that emphasises social and emotional development alongside academic achievement. 

With a robust Student Services Team, including a School Psychologist, Chaplain, and various support officers, a multi-tiered system has been established to address individual student needs.  

Programs, such as 'Onward and Upward", help students manage emotions and build essential skills, while strong community partnerships aim to enhance family engagement and resilience. 

By prioritising mental health, inclusive practices, and a culture of collaboration, Makybe Rise Primary School provides a nurturing environment where every student can thrive, academically and emotionally.
