Joshua Lo is only nine years old, but he’s already a published author and illustrator.
The young writer is the fourth student to have a book published at Carnaby Rise Primary School.
His peers took part in his recent book launch at the school, racing to buy a copy of his book, ‘Juicy the Fruit Fish’.
Carnaby Press was established in 2019 and is a small publishing imprint that produces student stories and illustrations.
The launch was a massive success, with the book selling out, leaving only the pre-ordered copies available.
“I’m ecstatic,” Joshua said. “I think it’s crazy.”
The book follows the tale of Juicy, a fish on a journey of self-discovery. Joshua hopes the story will spread the message for people to be confident and not shy.
Joshua also came second in the Year 3-4 category of the Children’s Book Council Australia Make Your Own Storybook competition.
“I feel kind of special,” Joshua said. “It’s throughout the whole of WA, I was kind of surprised.”
As part of his award, the Year 4 student can take part in a workshop to develop a chapter book.
He gave some sound advice to any young writers out there hoping to follow in his footsteps.
“Remember, if your book doesn’t get published, you still achieved a very big thing and you should be proud of yourself,” Joshua said.
“It’s an amazing thing to do.”
You can purchase a copy of ‘Juicy the Fruit Fish’ through Blurb.
