Working rights and visa options
To teach in Western Australia's public schools, you must hold appropriate working rights. These typically include citizenship, permanent residency, or a temporary visa with working rights. To explore working rights, head to the Department of Home Affairs3.
Temporary working rights
If you're an early childhood, primary, specialist, or secondary teacher with working rights, you can engage in casual and temporary (contract) positions within WA public schools. These working rights may be:
- attached to your spouse or partner’s employment
- a bridging visa while applying for independent permanent residency
- working holiday visas, like the subclass 4174 and subclass 462 visas5.
Be sure to review the conditions of your visa, as there might be restrictions on work hours or duration of employment. For instance, working holiday visa holders can work in public schools for up to 6 months in one location. Check visa conditions on the Department of Home Affairs website3.
Visas for graduate teachers
International early childhood or secondary school teacher graduates, who completed their qualifications outside of Australia and hold a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485 – graduate work stream), are eligible to teach in public schools. This visa is suitable if you complete the qualification within 6 months of applying.
Similarly, international early childhood or secondary school teacher graduates who completed their qualification at an Australian university while on a student visa, holding a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485 – post-study work stream), are eligible to teach in public schools.
Visa sponsorship
Qualified teachers with at least 2 years of recent full-time teaching experience may be eligible for temporary visa sponsorship, with the possibility of permanent sponsorship in future. We cover all visa application costs, including necessary qualifications assessments, and provide ongoing support throughout your journey.
Keep in mind that visa requirements may limit your role and location options during the sponsorship period, typically up to 4 years. But don't worry if you're short on experience – you could still teach during an extended holiday with a working holiday visa.
